DofE Parent Information Presentation

School of Outdoors Presentation - November 2023

At what age can I complete my Silver Award?
At JCS the DofE Silver Award is offered to students in Year 10 who have successfully completed their Bronze Award. Students will be provided with information about the Silver Award on their celebration evening for Bronze in September.

How many sections are in the Silver Award?
This award also has four sections: Volunteering, Skills, Physical and Expedition. The timescales are longer for some of the sections and it will take you at least 6 months to complete. Volunteering must be for a minimum of 6 months.  One of Skill and Physical must be for 6 months and the other for 3 months.

Students are entitled to carry on activities from their Bronze Award but we do encourage them to try something new. This is particularly relevant as they begin to consider future employment or training in a particular field. All students are expected to manage their DofE participation by regular use of their eDofE account.

Who delivers the expeditions and where do they take place?

As for the Bronze Award the expedition section is delivered by the school DofE team and our approved activity provider, The School of Outdoors, which provides the training, support and supervision to enable participants to safely undertake the expeditions.

Our Silver training day usually takes place in April with the practice expedition following in the May of each year. Qualifying expeditions take place either at the end of June or July.

Training day: 1 day at John Colet School
Practice expedition: 2 nights and 3 days
Qualifying expedition: 2 nights and 3 days
