Year 6 into 7 Transition

Dear Parents and Carers

You will by now have been advised that your child has been allocated a place for September 2024 at John Colet School. On behalf of all the staff and governors, may I warmly welcome you.

This ‘Welcome Booklet’ is only brief, and is intended to be a supplement to the prospectus and the information on the school website.

Our initial welcome letter, sent in March, outlines our plans for transition over the coming months. We will host our induction days for all new Year 7 students on Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 July. These days start at 9.00am and end at 2.30pm. Your child should wear the uniform that they normally wear to their current school for these two days. They will also need a pen or pencil, notebook, water bottle and packed lunch.

Please complete the Permission Form to indicate your child's attendance for the Induction Days.

The idea is to give students a feel for the school and make things more familiar ready for September. Your child may participate in a taster PE session, but they will not require a PE kit as they will not change for the session. You will need to ask the Headteacher of your child's current school for permission to attend and your child will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle on both days. If your child currently receives a free school meal, please contact your current school to ask them to inform us to arrange a packed lunch.

You will need to drop your child at the front entrance of John Colet School and collect them from the front entrance at 2.30pm. Please remember that parents/carers do not have vehicle access to our campus and so you will need to allow adequate time to park and walk.

I am also taking this opportunity to remind you of the invitation to visit the school on the evening of Tuesday 2 July when you will be able to meet myself and other members of staff. We look forward to welcoming you at 6.30pm in the school hall. There will be an opportunity for you to meet your child’s Head of Year and members of the Senior Leadership Team along with other key people, such as our Student Welfare Officer and members of the Learning Support Department.

Our uniform fitting/ordering day will be on Saturday 22 June between 10.00am – 3.00pm in the main hall. The day will be split into two sessions - 10:00am - 12:30pm for students whose surname begins A-M, and 12;30pm - 3:00pm for students whose surname begins N-Z. If you are unable to attend, you may order uniform directly from the supplier. Please refer to our Uniform Policy before purchase.

All students in Year 7 are strongly encouraged to bring a chromebook to school each day to support their learning. This opportunity enables our students to enrich and extend their learning both in and out of the classroom and ensures we are preparing them for life in a digital age. Please see the leaflet on our Chromebook 1:1 device purchase scheme.

A checklist of uniform and equipment to purchase can be found here.

You will be emailed a link to our electronic admissions form. This form must be completed to confirm acceptance of a place at John Colet School. Please refer to the Welcome Booklet, which contains a number of supporting documents to assist in the completion of the form.

In addition to the John Colet Admission Form you should also complete and return the following forms, if they apply:

Administration of Medicines Form

Individual Healthcare Plan

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Form

Free School Meal & Pupil Premium Application Form

Music Lesson Form

Direct Debit Mandate

Please ensure that you have completed the admissions form by 9.00am Monday 3 June. Without return of this form, we regret that your child will not be able to attend the induction days.

Email is our main method of communication so it is vital that a current email address is completed on the Admission Form. Where possible, we also ask for at least 2 contact numbers for your child.

I look forward to welcoming both you and your child to John Colet School.

Yours sincerely

Mr Ian Brierly
Headteacher
